In Paris for about 10 days in September 2008. Visited Aux Charpentiers twice, with the same great results. The staff here is friendly and very helpful - when our French failed us , they helped us along in very courteous manner. The food is, for the most part, straightforward bistro fare - Boudin Noir, Escargots, Poulet Roti, etc. - and of very high quality. The Prix fixe menus on both nights were fairly large and reasonably priced. The wine list is not large, but contains a nice selection and is well-priced. The restaurant is close to the Mabillon metro stop and right across the street from the St. Germain shopping center (underground parking available for those daring enough to drive in Paris). Definitely worth a stop if you're in the 6th.

I have been to this restaurant about 3 years ago when I visited Paris. It took me some time to find it. But it certainly worth the effort.

The food was so delicious and the waitress who served us was great.!

I also ran across a trip journal. The review and pictures matched exactly what I experienced.

Great restaurant. highly recommend !

I was so happy to have a beautiful dinner here with my friends. I had the prix fixe dinner. The starter was smoked salmon with dill and honey. The main course was lamb shoulder, and for dessert I had nougat in cranberry sauce. All were simply and perfectly prepared. I still remember the food very fondly and hope that I can return there very soon.

Wonderful and traditional--which means in France be prepared for dishes that use all of the animal from head to hoof--so be adventurous! Friendly and supportive owners and waitstaff. Quick and attentive service. Menu available in English. House wine was lovely: smooth and fragrant. The place was full of locals and English-speaking business people, yet service was hopping. Dinner prices very reasonable by Paris standards. Started with "Filets de Harengs Marines Pommes a l'huile" --warm potatoes juxtaposed with cold smoked fish--brought within 5 minutes of placing the order. Followed with Plat: "Pied de Porc Facon" was exactly as I hoped--crispy breaded skin giving way to steamy insides ready to smear on the bread or potatoes that accompanied the dish. What started life as a pig's trotter was elevated to heavenly status. Finished with "Brie de Meaux "after dinner-sublime. My husband had the "Saute de Veau Marengo"--tasty and filling--and we shared the starter and the cheese plate. I regret we could not have eaten here more than once. I came home and dug out my Julia Child cookbook after reading this restaurant's menu--an inspiration!

I have eaten at this restaurant several time, and have enjoyed it each time. I'm not a wine drinker (I know, I know...) so I can't comment on that, but the cuisine is excellent, and for a traveler, reasonable in the all-important budget category. I recommend it!

I had heard good things about this place and wanted to try it last year, but it was in the process of being renovated. This year was more successful. Everything I had heard was true. The decor is charming and inviting and could easily stand as a movie set for a Parisian bistro. The service was polite and helpful with a waiter who offered to assist in English but gracefully allowed me to plow ahead in my poor French. The owner and his wife were present and friendly. But bistros are about food and Charpentier was a treasure of traditional French cuisine. Every dish was fresh, well prepared and generously sized. Wine is included in the prix fixe lunch, and though hardly a fine vintage, it was appropriate for the food and quite drinkable. Overall this is an excellent value, and a place that beckons one to return to again and again. I will certainly heed that call.
