Chez Janou
your comments review this restaurant
Chez Janou was recommended to me by a friend. It's conveniently located in the Marais and looks just charming. I had a reservation and got there before the crowd. However, my quite decent meal was marred by one of the rudest waiters I've ever encountered. Before I even ordered, he chewed me out for borrowing paper napkins from the empty adjoining table. Chez Janou serves a small bowl of olives, and I needed a place to put the pits. I was reprimanded like an eight-year old child. I may go back, but not until this guy works somewhere else!

I can't comment on the food here, although it looked nice. All I can say, is that we made a reservation for 10pm on a Saturday night. We arrived on time, to a packed bar with other people waiting from 9.30 reservations. I told the barman I had arrived, he said that the table would be at least 10 mins - fine we thought - we can have a drink. It got later and later. Noone told us what was going on, when I asked the barmen they just shrugged and almost laughed. All the other people waiting were getting annoyed too. At 10.50 we'd still not been seated so left to find somewhere else. It was truly a dissapointing evening and ruined my last night in Paris!

the best chocolate mousse in the world and the prawns sauteed in Pastis liquer are incredible.

Please don't go to this restaurant as there is less chance of me getting a table whenever I go...I found this place by accident when I lived in Paris and we used to go weekly. Great food, excellent wine, awesome atmosphere, brilliant location. You get quite a few tourists in here but this is also a cool local place to eat with plenty of Marais regulars.

Everytime my husband and I go to Paris, we ALWAYS go to Chez Janou. We absolutely love the food and the atmosphere. It is cramped but that's part of the charm and proves it's a great restaurant. All recommend it to everyone who loves beautiful French cooking!

This is my favorite restaurant in Paris. I love the bustling atmosphere, the fabuous South of France food, especially the spinach salad w/ chevre, and the fact that they have like 500 pastis on the menu. I lived there for a few years and it was our once a week place. Every time I go back I always go there. Rally not to be missed and definately make a reservation.

you all just forgot to talk about the wonderful and pointless 'Pastis' list they have built over the last few years. just amazing for people who likes typical French 'apero'. some of them go over there just to enjoy a few glasses of different Pastis. hence a warm atmosphere at the bar, before having a nice diner in any case.

It is cramped and busy but surely that is a good sign - don't eat out in Paris if you can't give as good as you get. Good food and wine list and well located for going out afterwards too.

I'd get the eurostar weekly from London just so that I could eat there! Very busy, very cramped but all part of the experience. The staff are great - down to earth and not bothered if you sit there all night. Food is simple but fabulous and the all-you-can-eat chocolate mousse is pointless as you'll have no room...

Chez Janou was one of our favorite restaurants. I loved the young staff and patrons. It is a lively, fun and cheerful place with good, solid Provençal cuisine.
